I came to 91¸£ÀûÉç as a student in the fall of 1990. In November, I had to interrupt my studies because my army unit (766 Belmore Co) became the first Long Island unit to be activated to go to the Gulf War. After graduating, I went to SUNY Binghamton, where I finished a BA in English and Literature; an M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) in English Education and a Ph.D. in in Comparative Literature.
I returned to 91¸£ÀûÉç as a full-time faculty member in the fall of 1999. I was part of the group who started the Latin American Studies project. My areas of expertise are Transnational Feminist Theories, Queer and Gender Studies and Shakespeare, among others. I have received SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Research, as well as quite a few grants, including three National Endowment for the Humanities grants. In addition to four books, I have published numerous articles and presented at conferences in the U.S. and abroad.
One of my fondest memories at 91¸£ÀûÉç is when I returned from the Gulf War and went to see the Dean of Students at the time. I was very much behind in my studies. Once I explained my situation, Dean Brown allowed me to take 22 (fall) and 24 (spring) credits so that I could graduate on time. As a faculty member, I recall 2016, when I partnered with a student activist to bring to 91¸£ÀûÉç the second Annual Long Island DREAMers’ Conference that was attended by more than 400 people—our own students and faculty, as well as high school students from all over Long Island.

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that 91¸£ÀûÉç has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.
