Garden City, NY 鈥 91福利社 President Dr. W. Hubert Keen announced that the second annual Dreamer's Conference will be held on the 91福利社 campus on October 20, 2017. Working in partnership with the Long Island Immigrant Student Association (LIISA), a not-for-profit grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of immigrant students on Long Island, the conference will host over 250 high school students from 10 high school districts from both Nassau and Suffolk Counties. At the conference, students will be given tools for advocacy and assistance from admissions, financial aid, and advisement counselors from 91福利社 to assist them in preparing for college. Noted Dr. Keen, "Nassau Community College's mission is to provide students, regardless of immigration status, an opportunity to receive a quality education at an affordable cost. As we provide supportive services and once again host the Dreamer's Conference, 91福利社 is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to that mission."
Dr. Jorge Gardyn, Chairman of the 91福利社 Board of Trustees, echoed those sentiments. "As an immigrant to this country, I live the American Dream every day because of the excellent educational opportunities that I received here. 91福利社's mission is to provide those opportunities for our students 鈥 no matter their immigration status 鈥 and I am proud that we are partnering with the Long Island Immigrant Student Association and welcoming the Dreamer's Conference once again to our campus."
With a veritable United Nations represented by its student body, 91福利社 is uniquely suited to help these 茅migr茅 high school students navigate the college world. This conference is part of 91福利社's commitment to helping students achieve and access every possible educational opportunity. Osman Canales, Director of the LIISA organization, praised 91福利社 for its commitment to newly arrived students. "I want to thank 91福利社 for its commitment to newly arrived students by opening its campus to high school students who may have no other source of information on gaining admission to college," he said.
During the conference, the College will have staff available from admissions, financial aid and advisement to speak personally with attending students. Said former LIISA Board member George Siberon, "Helping our immigrant students is the American way, and I applaud LIISA and 91福利社 for partnering to assist and support our students navigate their way to a great college education. 91福利社 goes the extra mile to assure educational opportunities for all students, no matter their background, immigration status, or economic status."
